Diogenes: One of the Great Catholic Commentators

I love “snarky” dry humor and one of the people I look forward to writing an opinion piece is Diogenes at CatholicCulture.com. He “Off the Record” column can be incredibly humorous. He can be a little obsessed with the pedophile scandal and I don’t always agree with his hard comments on Bishops, except for some that truly deserve it. He has a wonderful way of point out the foolishness of some peoples claims.

I don’t like the copy/paste method of blogging, I think content can be original and not stolen. But I am going to break that rule, because this is just too funny and I hope CatholicCulture.com gets some more hits because of it (yeah that is a means justifies the end statement). So go read CatholicCulture.com, because they have such great articles!

Catholic Teachings cannot be taught in Catholicism

Helen sent me this story.  The University of Illinois believes Catholic teaching cannot be taught in a class on Catholicism because of hate speech.

The University of Illinois has fired an adjunct professor who taught courses on Catholicism after a student accused the instructor of engaging in hate speech by saying he agrees with the church’s teaching that homosexual sex is immoral.

Now lets put one and one together here.  The student is ticked off that the professor sent an email out to his students in order to help prepare them for an upcoming exam.  What a bad teacher!  He actually tried to help his students succeed!  Here is the email:

"Natural Moral Law says that Morality must be a response to REALITY," he wrote in the e-mail. "In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same."

One of the Most Influential…

image One of the most influential men of the last 50 years died Thursday. His name was Dr. Henry Edward Roberts (1941-2010). Dr. Roberts was the man who put together a build-it-yourself computer kit. It was his computer kit that Bill Gates and Robert Allen (Microsoft Co-Founders) bought and made their first software work on. The rest is history…

Not many outside the computer world would know his name and frankly not that many in the industry either. Reading of his death made me think about how we influence others and that we are not really alone in our actions or inactions. This was something the parish priest touched on last week.

Whether you make a build-it-yourself computer (pictured below) to try and get out of debt or just be a good friend/parent/sibling/employee or you are the sacrificial lamb for us all, it is never by yourself and there are always others that feel the upstream and downstream effect. It must have been very satisfying for Dr. Roberts to have seen how a decision of his changed some lives.

Don’t tell the liberals – Christianity is growing

Shhhhh….don’t tell them.  I know it will be another blow to their psyche.  First they find out that they are actually a political minority, then the Tea Party movement comes along and blows them away to the point of going into hysterics, and now I’m worried that they will just totally freak when they find this out.  If it wasn’t bad enough – it is the traditional faiths that are growing!

The National Council of Churches’ 2010 Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches reports membership gains in the Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Assemblies of God, among others.The-Catholic-Church

The 78th annual edition of the Yearbook also reports a continuing decline in membership of virtually all mainline denominations. And the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s second largest denomination and long a reliable generator of church growth, reported a decline in membership for the second year in a row, down 0.24 percent to 16,266,920.

Plane Crashes Into IRS Building – Austin, TX

image Before noon eastern today “Joseph Andrew Stack, a 53-year-old software engineer who lived in Texas, crashed the plane intentionally” into the IRS building in Austin, TX (source FoxNews). He left behind a manifesto that describes his disdain for the IRS.

As I watched the news I noticed a nice little trend happening on MSNBC and CNN, that is was those crazy conservatives and those “tea party people” that caused this. After reading his manifesto I don’t consider him conservative or liberal, but seriously angry and disappointed in the US system (he claims it is all lies). He seems to take shots at pretty much everything, including Catholics, in his manifesto.

Let us know what you think of what is happening and feel free to add in related information below.

Oh the embarrassment….

image I was reading the news and I truly enjoy “odd” news stories… Along comes a story that should embarrass and make prison life entertaining for one robber. “Missouri Nuns Chase Down Armed Robber on Foot”… Now after you stop laughing, it gets worse….

A pair of sandal-clad nuns in Missouri chased down an armed robbery suspect and helped police put handcuffs on him…

Now if that wasn’t bad enough…

When he realized he had been spotted the suspect set off on foot and was chased by a nun in flip-flops…

So let me get this right… He was spotted by a nun, chased down by a women wearing flip-flops, and then she helped the police put the cuffs on him!

They said it would never happen

Yet is happening:

The Catholic Children’s Society, whose president is Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, announced that it will no longer assess individuals or couples as prospective adoptive or foster parents.

The charity has pulled out of its principal role because it cannot reconcile Church teaching on marriage and the family with the demands of the Sexual Orientation Regulations, Labour’s gay rights laws that compel Catholic-Charites adoption agencies to assess same-sex couples as prospective parents as well as heterosexuals.

The agency was founded in 1859 and the move brings to an end a service offered by one of the oldest adoption agencies in the country.

The trustees are convinced that what is best for children is that they be brought up by married couples. This is shown by research but it is also consonant with the teaching of the Church.

Hocus Pocus Let the Coven use the Oven

What will they think of next?

(News from the U.K.)

A coven of witches is accusing the Roman Catholic church of religious  persecution after being banned from using a parish social centre for a Halloween gathering.

Sandra Davis, the "high priestess" of Crystal Cauldron group in Stockport, Greater Manchester, said she was shocked to be told that the pagan group was not considered to be compatiblPD*29540134e with the church’s "ethos".

Mrs Davis, 61, booked Our Lady’s Social Club in Shaw Heath, Stockport, for the group’s annual "Witches Ball" due to be held in October.

The Reverend John Joyce, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese of Shrewsbury, said that it was out of the question for a pagan group to use its facilities.

"Parish centres under our auspices let their premises on the understanding users and their organisations are compatible with the ethos and teachings of the Catholic church," he said.

But the State Doesn’t Want to Separate

First the state of Connecticut wanted to interfere in the Roman Catholic Church and force the Church to reorganize.  The state wanted the Church to hand over all authority to the State taking away all the rights of the Pastor’s of the Church.  It was very specific to the Catholic Church and no other religion.  Naturally, the Church banded together to get the public aware of this complete violation of the Constitution and now they might be punished for doing the only American thing they could do when their rights are being threatened:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport filed a lawsuit against the Office of State Ethics on Friday.

The diocese said the officials are requiring the Diocese of Bridgeport to register as a lobbyist in order to engage in activities such as a rally at the State Capitol or using its Web site to encourage its members to contact their elected representatives.

Does An Apology Fix All?

Valerie is busy and MK’s house apparently has the plagues… So Val asked me to post this news article from Zenit, via the Catholic League.

Expresses Regret for Harm to Church and Victims

LONDON, FEB. 26, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Bishop Richard Williamson, formerly excommunicated member of the Society of St. Pius X, apologized today for statements in which he denied the extent of the Holocaust.

In a statement published on his return to London on Wednesday after being expelled by the government of Argentina, the prelate explained that "the Holy Father and my superior, Bishop Bernard Fellay, have requested that I reconsider the remarks I made on Swedish television four months ago, because their consequences have been so heavy."
