Mental Health – then and now
First, the set up:
Led by Twenge, researchers at five universities analyzed the responses of 77,576 high school or college students who, from 1938 through 2007, took the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, or MMPI.
Overall, an average of five times as many students in 2007 surpassed thresholds in one or more mental health categories, compared with those who did so in 1938. A few individual categories increased at an even greater rate – with six times as many scoring high in two areas:
- "hypomania," a measure of anxiety and unrealistic optimism (from 5 percent of students in 1938 to 31 percent in 2007)
- and depression (from 1 percent to 6 percent)…..
The truth about the uninsured
I saw these statistics this morning on the Fox News program Fox and Friends and have spent most of the morning verifying their numbers. I verified this information at the National Center for Policy Analysis(NCPA), Business and Media Institute, The Census Bureau, Employment Policies Institute, and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
So here it is:
We hear it all the time, that there are approximately 47 Million people uninsured. This number is true, but extremely misleading. The problem is they don’t tell you what qualifies as an uninsured person. The CBO report has the definition of uninsured as “uninsured at some point in time”. This is how long a person actually goes without insurance. If a person switches jobs and there is a 1 week gap between the Cobra insurance ending and the new jobs insurance beginning, that counts as one of the millions of uninsured.
To lie or not to lie, that is the question
So which is it?
If a pregnancy was terminated for any reason, this heightened the risk of premature and very premature delivery in subsequent pregnancies.
If a previous pregnancy had to be terminated for any reason, that may increase the risk of premature rupture of the membrane, premature and very premature delivery in subsequent pregnancies.
If a previous pregnancy had to be terminated for any reason, premature birth was a risk in subsequent pregnancies.
And women who have had more than one abortion double their risk of having a "very" premature baby – classed as being born before 34 weeks.
Those who terminate a pregnancy are subsequently more likely to give birth prematurely, with two or more abortions more than doubling the odds.
Obama’s Change?
I don’t think the change Obama was talking about was this:
Thus far in 2009, 40% of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys describe their political views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004. The 21% calling themselves liberal is in line with findings throughout this decade, but is up from the 1990s.
These annual figures are based on multiple national Gallup surveys conducted each year, in some cases encompassing more than 40,000 interviews. The 2009 data are based on 10 separate surveys conducted from January through May. Thus, the margins of error around each year’s figures are quite small, and changes of only two percentage points are statistically significant.
First it was a jump in people who call themselves pro-life now a jump in people who consider themselves conservative.
Planned Parenthood and the Elementary School
From KNDO NBC:
Planned Parenthood is hoping to get the green light and set up a new clinic on West Court Street in Pasco. But what has so many concerned is it’s right next door to Mark Twain Elementary School.
"It doesn’t belong right here in the heart of a community with a bunch of little children," (Deeana Hoyt is a mother of three and owner of a daycare) says. "It needs to be placed somewhere else."
But Planned Parenthood is defending the point of interest, saying the West Court Street location is easily accessible.
"Is it on a bus line, is it easy for our clients to access that location?" asks Karl Eastlund, chief operating officer for the clinic. "It’s close to 395 and it provides access to clients in the community."
The Kennewick clinic is the only Planned Parenthood in the Tri-Cities, something they say makes a new spot more vital.
Here a poll, there a poll, everywhere an abortion poll
The topic of abortion, something most people like to ignore, is becoming front and center in the news lately. Lifenews reported a new CNN Opinion Research corporation poll shows that Americans oppose Obama’s abortion record since taking office however CNN’s headline on the same poll says that his abortion record isn’t hurting him. HUH?
You all know me and when I come up with these things I go straight to the source. Well, good luck finding the source. I can’t. Could I be looking too soon? So, I’m still bewildered on what that poll actually said. I refuse to read bias “interpretation” of a poll, which both Lifenews and CNN are, so I just kept on searching until I found Polling Report website. Funny thing is, they are only showing 1 question from the CNN poll. Something tells me they couldn’t find the source either.
The Fetus IS an Unborn Child
I found the wording in this article very interesting so I thought I would share:
We told you last Friday about a bill sponsored by Representative Dan Ruby on the issue of abortion.
This isn`t the fist time Ruby has sponsored a bill on the topic. This bill would establish that the unborn are people who are protected under the constitution.
It could call into question the constitutionality of Roe vs. Wade….
But Planned Parenthood came out in opposition saying challenging Roe Versus Wade would cost the state millions of dollars in court fees.
"To my mind I`m here to state the obvious which is, that will involve the state in a protracted legal battle," says Tim Stanley, of Planned Parenthood. "It goes without saying and I`ll be the first to say that there would be a court challenge to that."
US Census Bureau Reveals How Pathetic We Really Are
The census bureau has redefined was a parent is. From the NY Times:
Andrew J. Cherlin, a sociology professor at Johns Hopkins Univeristy said that before 2007, a child living with two unmarried parents was usually classified as living with either a mother or a father, depending on who was the head of the household.
“The unmarried parent was invisible,” Professor Cherlin said. Given a new category, “living with both parents, not married to each other,” he added, “I think the news is that the Census Bureau estimates that about 3 percent of American children are living with two unmarried parents. Because of the increases in living-together relationships, this is probably a higher figure than a generation ago.”
I’m confused. Up until now "parents" had to be married to be considered "parents"? How does that make sense?
Anywho… I’m not writing this article to tell you that….. Also from the NY Times:
According to the bureau’s estimates, the number of black children living with two parents was 59 percent in 1970, falling to 42 percent in 1980, 38 percent in 1990 and 35 percent in 2004. In 2007, the latest year for which data is available, it was 40 percent.
For non-Hispanic whites, the figure in 2007 was 77 percent, down from 90 percent in 1970.
